I took Diana down to Loelia’s and we arrived just before Alastair Forbes.

Ali was very good with Loelia. Gérald Van der KempXLVII was mentioned.

‘Your lover.’

‘Well. That’s rather indelicate.’

But he got away with it.

Ali is so funny but he has a way of brainwashing one so that one forgets his stories. Basically all we did was to lunch. Then, to escape Loelia’s appalling idea of us picking up conkers, Ali and I went to Guildford. Then back for tea, champagne at drinks time, then dinner and bed. Ali left after breakfast the next day.

I loved Ali’s description of Lucian Freud’s pictures. He can’t wait to get his sitters into ‘the gynaecologists’ stirrups’. It is certainly how he looks at them.

Ali loves to make direct remarks and sometimes he offends. The best side of him is his love of his son and his urging of everyone to enjoy their sons while they can. He said he’d given up sex now because he had seen in friends’ bathrooms the treatment they give for herpes.
